I'm looking on how to go about changing the hyd. filter for lift arms in my tractor is there a side cover or do i have to remove the top of the rear end and is there a special order to do that thanks, bill

There's two filter inside there. The suction/pickup tube has a screen in the end and is meant to be cleaned and re-used. The return line has a cartridge type filter that is meant to be replaced.

There is no side cover that allows access to either. I think that on a 3 cylinder 2000 you can access both by removing the top cover. If you don't have one, get yourself a service manual, either a real Ford manual or at least an I&T aftermarket manual. If you're going to be removing the top cover just to clean and replace the filter, it would be a good idea to at least do all of the adjustments for the 3 point control linkage while you're in there, an probably a better idea to replace all the seals and o-rings in there as well.

Second to Sean's comment. Use a hoist and lift it straight up. There's a long tube under the right front corner of the cover that runs down to where the pressure line goes into the main case. About a foot long with O-rings top and bottom. It may stay down or it may come up with the cover. Easy to break it if you don't know it's there.

wb007 thank you for the info, looking at the book it's not that clear. from what I see that cover lifts up and nothing is directly connected to it. can I leave the upper cover alone and just remove the lower one????

Not sure what you mean by the upper vs. lower cover. Maybe you're referring to the blocking plate as the "upper cover"? The top cover is the large piece that the seat mounts to that also has the upper lift arms and 3 point control quadrant attached to it. The small rectangular plate that you seen when looking down between your knees while sitting on the tractor is the blocking plate. No need to take the blocking plate off separately, just leave it on the top cover when you remove the top cover.

(quoted from post at 17:37:23 09/25/17) Sean,
That little block off plate has to come
off to pull the top cover.
There is a bolt or two under that hold the
top cover on.

Ultradog, are you sure? I thought that the only bolts under there were to hold the lift cylinder to the underside of the top cover. The I&T manual says to just unbolt the top cover from the center housing and lift it off, and then it says if you want to service the cylinder that you have to remove the blocking plate and remove the bolts holding the cylinder to the top cover.
