Generator light

Long time lurker, just joined. I have a weird problem - replaced the battery on my 1969 Ford 5000 last week. Battery would not charge using a charger. Now the gen light gets brighter the more I rev the engine. I checked connections. Everything is tight. It has a generator. Could the gen have lost it's polarity and I need to flash it? Would doing that if it didn't need it hurt anything? Anyone have any ideas or thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Flashing the field, even when it's not needed, will not hurt anything. That said, you could have an issue with the key switch power to the
instrument lights. Does your oil warning lamp work normally, or your gauges? If not, suspect blown instrument fuse. This will cause the light
to glow as you describe.

Another test is to put a voltmeter on the battery and start the engine. If the voltage creeps up above 13 to 13.5 or so, you know it's
charging.
