Ford 4000 Trans Input Shaft Seals

This is how the seals were installed in a 4000 I split for a clutch. They seem backwards to me. Usually the "back" of the seal with the spring goes towards the oil. These are just the opposite, but as hard and cracked as they are I wouldn't doubt if they are original.

I figured I'd let the experts weigh in on this. Is this how they go or should I put the new ones in the opposite direction. Thanks, Jeff

I doubt very much that it is the first clutch job for a fifty year old tractor. It could have gone through three in its early life if it had a loader on it.
