Do your arms stay up?

After all the hassle I had fixing the hydraulics in my Ford 4000 I finally got round to attaching an implement to it - a Wessex Scrubmaster topper (big chains instead of blades). It weighs a good half a tonne and the arms lift it without an issue (was a doddle unloading from the trailer with the loader too!). However, the lift seems a bit jerky and I thought I'd have a look underneath it once I'd switched the engine off but it started lowering immediately. Not as fast as it would with the lever in the lower position but I had to be quick to peek underneath before it hit the floor.

Those of you who were aware of my hydraulic issues also knew that the PTO didn't stop spinning. With the mower attached and the PTO disengaged it does spin lazily, not really fast enough to cause any damage, I'd say. With the mower on the floor it stops. Engaging the PTO turns on the fury and I've been hard at it this morning! Glad I bought something with chains as hit a brick within 5 minutes...

Sounds like the lift cylinder need to have new O-rings installed in it. As for the PTO what oil are you using in the transmission?? If you use the thick 80W-90 or other such oil that is why it does that and is oil spin due to oil making the PTO spin. The PTO on my 841S spin most of the time due to oil but I do not have anything hooked to it

I agree that there's something leaking inside for the lift to drop that quickly when the engine is shut off, most likely the piston o-ring as you said.

I think he has a 3 cylinder 4000, so the oil in the trans shouldn't have anything to do with the PTO. My guess is either the PTO brake isn't grabbing or the PTO clutch plates are a little warped, or both. Either one means the clutch pack needs to be serviced.

I'm pretty sure the PTO clutch is warped but from reading elsewhere the 3-cylinder 4000 is notorious for it. I'm not too fussed about it at the moment.

The lift is a little jerky too - it's like it is raising and then correcting a drop. Not a massive problem as at least it lifts in the first place and my grass and brambles are shorter than they were!

Sounds like the oil is leaking past the piston seal in the lift seal. Inside the transmission there is a filter on the oil pick up, that could be blocked hence the lift is jerky as if the oil supply is restricted. As an aside I put a 3 furrow Ransomes plough on my 5000 at the weekend, it was the first heavy load since at least 2004 and it lifted it and held it raised even with the engine off. Wouldn't want to go underneath it but it held.
