Ford 800 hydraulic problems

I have a ford 800. The hydraulics have quit working. It has a piston type pump. The pump has a brass plug in it which is crumbling as I try to remove it so not luck priming it. I tried changing the fluid with no effect. I can get them to work by shooting pressure in the hydraulic dipstick but they work very slow. Don't really know anything about the hydraulic system. Any suggestions on where to start? Thanks

How much is left of the plug? You can get a heat gun or hair dryer and heat the area around the plug so it will expand some and maybe give a little. A little pipe tape would have been nice. I've gotten hold of some fittings that instead of just tightening them to the point where they dont leak, they just run 'em down where they are guaranteed not to leak, or come apart again. If you can get the plug out you can put a pressure gauge in there. I think you have to chain the arms down to get a full pressure reading. It should lift the front of the tractor. Maybe someone else will chime in here.

I forgot there is a plug on the right side of the hydraulic lift cover that you might get a pressure check on. Someone also said to look through the fill plug on top and see if you can see oil leaking out.

Thanks for the reply. Can you tell me what a pressure check will tell me as far as troubleshooting? Bad pump, seal, o-ring?

Here's a few more details on whats happening. When the tractor is started the hydraulics will work for about 1 minute, then they quit. When I put pressure through the hydraulic dipstick the will start to work again and stay working, usually slowly. Today the hydraulics started working at normal speed after running the tractor for awhile. Does anyone know what might be causing this? Where do I start troubleshooting?

If you have to pressurize the reservoir to get it to pump every time you use it, it is because it has lost prime & that is due to suction side air leak. Maybe in pump seals or line connections. Measuring output pressure will do nothing to help find that leak.

Thanks. Any advice on how to track this down. I am new to messing around with the hydraulic system. They sound kind of complicated. Does
the pump need a rebuild or seals?. Where are the lines located that may be leaking? Thanks for your help.

Pump shaft seal as well as seals at both ends of the manifold that connect pump to transmission housing are common trouble spots.
