Ford 801 power steering leak

Hello All
I own a 57 Ford 801 with factory power steering. I have developed a sizable leak of power steering fluid that is coming out of my vent/filler plug for my steering housing AND out of the top of my steering column. Looking at my FO20 manual it looks like my problem might possibly be the oil seals ( on the steering shaft) above and below the control valve. The steering works well...until the fluid all dumps. Can someone tell me if I am on the right track and if so, how difficult it is to remove those seals. All parts appear to be available at Ford/New Holland.
Thanks so much
Paul

Pauliboi - I just did this on my '57 Powermaster. It also has factory-installed power steering. This isn't too tough a job, but
it does take a little time. You'll need to remove the steering wheel and dashboard assembly. It's actually a lot easier if the
entire hood comes off as well. Once it's all clear, pay close attention to how the steering assembly parts are removed. This is
especially true with respect to the control valve, as it contains parts (i.e., plungers, balls) that love to fall out (from the
bottom surface) and disappear forever. I know this for a fact, as I learned this the hard way. Once you've got it all off and
cleaned up, you will definitely want to replace all of the lip seals and O-rings. The O-rings are easy, and the lip seals can be
pried out with a suitable pick. Be sure to note how the seals are oriented when you remove them, as the new ones have to go back
in the same way. I took it a step further and removed the entire steering gear assembly as well and overhauled that too. As long
as you carefully follow your manual, you should be fine. Aside from Ford, replacement parts are also available from the usual
suppliers (as in this site and others). Good luck!

Thanks for the quick reply.....I was thinking it was doable....that being said thanks for the warning....hate the sound of unknown parts hitting the floor!!!

Do you guys remove the whole steering assembly....or do you leave it on the tractor and work you way down to the control valve and leaking seals???
Thanks
Paul

Paul - Start with the steering wheel, then remove the upper support assembly with it's associated upper and lower bearing and lock
nut. Once all of this is off (slid up and off of the steering wheel shaft), it's then time to disconnect the six different
hydraulic lines going to the control valve. If you've got a camera (or even a sketch pad), now is a good time to carefully record
how all six lines are connected. The control valve can actually be installed upside down if you're not careful. You'll then have
access to the lower support assembly. If memory serves, both the upper and lower supports contain lip seals and it's these that
definitely have to replace. Good luck!
