Ford 640 Generator Belt replacement? What the?

1955 Ford Model 640 134 ci engine

Can't find anything in the shop manual on changing the generator belt... am I loosing it or does the front lower pump have to be removed?

Looks like the belt can't come off the crank pulley less a whole bunch of stuff is disconnected.

Anyone do these before?
My ears are wide open.

Thanks,

If your tractor has a front mounted hydraulic pump for a loader that is driven off of a shaft from the crankshaft pulley, then you are correct that the shaft must be disconnected either at the pulley itself or at the coupler, if there is one, to get the new belt installed.

I have used link-belts on tractors with front pumps with great success. They have lasted years without failure. You need to take out a link after a few hours once they stretch to their full limit, but other than that, they work great and save many hours of time and aggravation in attempting to remove pumps, etc. for front end loaders.

Never heard of link belts?
Wonder if they make one for my engine type? 134 ci

I'll check with this website and see.
I'd be willing to give one a shot in this situation.
Mine looks like it's getting ready to break.
Thanks for that information.

Thanks for that information Sean,
Guess I'll have to get my reciprocating saw out and go to town!
It will literally CUT the job time in half I'm sure! :)

They sell them online, at harbor
freight, tractor supply, etc. They
work great. They may not last 20 years,
but they are strong and can be adjusted
to fit any length. Look them up.

Can you tell me where you purchased a Link Belt?
Not finding one at this site.. but still searching the web for one.

actually, the more I think about it, I'm just going to remove whatever has to be removed and install the correct belt.

I'll take mine off... look for a number on it and if I can't find one I'll just go to a local truck parts sales place and match it up.

Thanks again for all the help.

PS: Doing complete fluid changes tomorrow.
Engine / Trany / Rear end and hydraulics... all new fluids.
Can't wait.

They made a few different setups for that pump shaft. Start by loosening the bolts that hold the pump itself in place and then you should be able to slide the pump forward enough to slide the shaft out of the coupler or the pulley depending on what exact setup yours has. If that doesn't work then you'll have to come in from the bottom and remove the bolts holding the coupler to the pulley and then the coupler and shaft should be able to move forward enough with the pump to slide the belt in between the coupler and the pulley.

Just on a side note. Ive heard of using pantyhose for a fan belt in a pinch. Just keep 'em in your glove box and see if the wife questions you.

I removed the bolts holding the pump to the frame.. slid the pump forward but still not enough room to get the belt off. The coupler PINS that slide into the pully slide out of the pulley but just not enough room to squeeze the belt thru that opening. There actually IS no opening after sliding the pump forward.

I'm going to leave it for now..
I tightened the belt and it's not as bad as I thought it was.

Thanks for all the help Sean and company..

PS: As far as panty hose goes... I had to stop wearing em when I met my wife. Figured she'd start askn questions or something and she doesn't wear em cuz she likes to let her leg hair grow out a few inches, then she ties little pink bows up and down her legs....but thanks for the tip
