looking at one to buy but the transmission doesn't work...parts available?..difficulty on working on one...do I need special tools?....its in good shape gas rowcrop wide front with power steering...old style sheet metal...I knew a guy that had one and really liked it but it all worked as he had bought it brand new...I just don't know anything about them...is it worth messing with ?...thanks for any replies

"Old sheet metal" tells me that it is four cylinder. Since it doesn't work you should be able to get it for very short money enabling you to spend some. It could be as simple as the traction disconnect is off. Or it could be a worn out input shaft which is readily repairable. On this forum you can find out the nearest SOS repair shop to your location.

Probably not the best candidate for the novice. It's fair to say, you need more information to really diagnose what is wrong with it. Could be as simple as the traction disconnect is applied, or real mechanical problems. Certain gears being problematic can point to a cause etc.

Sounds like a pre '64 model.

Correct books are a must have, and ideally someone who knows these transmissions, which at this point in time is very limited. This is a good place to ask. I ran a '64 4000 for many years, mid 70's to early 80's, thought it was a great tractor for the work it did, performed well until all those years until some fool my father let borrow it decided to change the oil in the trans and used the incorrect type. That was the end of it. We sold them new towards the end of their offering of these and at that time they had the problems with the early series of them worked out. Most will tell you to run away as fast as you can, and to buy one not working, don't pay more than scrap steel value.

What part of Missouri?

I think the others have pretty much told you what you need to know and that we need to know more about what it does or doesn't do to help diagnose it.

As with anything that old, parts may not be readily available and if they are they'll likely be pricey.

His moniker says he's somewhere in Missouri. First thing he'd need to know though, is which transmission he has and which you have . . . that's after he figures out that it's not simply the traction disconnect.

If he needs parts he should either have a C0NN 7006 B or a C3NN 7006 B transmission. If yours is not the same, not all of the parts interchange, specifically the input shafts and mating parts.
