My battery was dead so I charged it up and started my 1964 Ford 2000. My question is do you loose the generator polarization when the battery goes dead. After working the tractor it was not showing charging by the meter. It is positive ground.

did not disconnect any terminals or battery. Was it the lost of power from the battery?

You can if it's dead/disconnected for a a period of time.
The cutout in the voltage regulator disconnects the generator
from the battery every time you shut the tractor off and the
residual magnetism is maintained in the generator, so it doesn't
happen over night.
If you charged the battery, the generator had no need to charge
it other than to replace what it took to start the tractor.
What does the ammeter read with the lights on?

If your battery was totally dead it could have happened. If the battery had any power left at all, it should not have.

I'll go against the grain here and say no, it should not lose its polarization. Generators retain what is known as residual magnetism in the pole shoes, and it should not be lost just because the battery went dead. Stated another way, the generator does not rely on the battery to self-excite like an alternator does.

I agree with Bern.. the material in the field shoes is made to be magnetized and hold it for a very very very long time. The only way to mess that up, is to polarize it backwards.

This is possible and can be done by putting the battery in backwards, and starting the tractor. The reg will apply a reverse field voltage and can RE polarize the generator in the reverse field. I have seen this in about 5 cases while doing two-way radio repair. Each time the radio quit working when the vehicle had a battery replacement, and blew the fuse. I have seen one case where an 8d battery was actually reversed charged on a pumper.

Brand new generators and rebuilt generators need to be polarized.. the latter due to the shoes/field coils may have been removed and reinstalled in a reverse position.
