801 Steering issues

My dad has an 801 he replaced the gear box in about five years ago. Has anyone had two go out and the same non steering issue in one direction happen. If he replaces again, is there another problem that could cause it to fail again?
 

Say more! did he replace it with a used box? Is it manual or power steering? What exactly happens when it quits?

My guess would be manual steering and that the steering shaft upper bearing goes out and lets the steering wheel walk up out of its housing when turning to the left?????

Yes it's manual, it's a 62. The problem is when turning left and then won't return right. It was replaced with a new one.

What happens when it won't return right? Does it lock up? Or does the steering shaft and wheel come up out of the housing?

I would suggest then that either he needs to find a better source for steering gear, check the lube in the gearcase or protect it from the weather.

My guess is, if it has proper lube, that the upper steering shaft bearing is still your culprit.
 

An additional thought or two. Are the king pins and tie rod ends all lubed well? Does this tractor have a front end loader on it or anything else that would make it more difficult to steer?
 
I will ask him. I have not seen it. But no he isn't using a front
end loader, just plows and a bush hog on the back with the
pto. Thanks for your help.
