1970 Ford 4400 NewDistrubutor ate Governor Gear

I recently pruchased a solid 1970 Ford 4400. it was running a little rough and seemd to have some timing issues so I dropped in a new distributor. Tractor ran great for about 3 hours. Then it backfired and quit. The distributor no longer engages the gears on the governor shaft so I assume the distributor ground the shaft gears down. My new dizzy has a very shiny gear on it while my old dizzy has a dull, cast looking gear. Does the new dizzy have the wrong gear on it, maybe too hard? or is this just a case of new parts breaking old parts The governor shaft is over 300 bucks so i cant afford for this to happen again. Should I sawp the gear off the old dizzy onto the new one? Is there something else am missing?

I know with car cams and dist gears, you
have to be sure of if the cam gear is
hardened or not and pick the dist gear to
match. Mismatch causes the exact symptoms
you describe

I think i verified that but i will double check b4 i spend 300!

Yes, just came out of a relationship with a 5.0 ford roller motor in a car and you have to get the right gear. That is why I am concerned.

If your sure the gear on the governor shaft is eat up ether the dist gear is the wrong medal or the gears teeth didn't match the ones on the governor.

I may have a spare governor assembly or two from some gas engines we parted out, if your interested I'll take a look.

Thank you. I will be back donw at my place Memorial day weekend. I want to absolutely confrim that the shaft is the problem. Then you can check on one for me, once I confirm thats the issue.

I've got a gas short block setting in the shop, I look it over this after noon and try to email you tonight.
