1974 Ford 2000 Lift problem

I purchased a 1974 Ford 2000 tractor some time back. When I got it the lift was not working properly. The lift would go fully up or down, nothing in between. I took it to
a dealer to correct the problem. They worked on it and got it better but not like it should be. Like if you move the control about 1/4 to 1/3 up or down the lift will not
move. Then if you move it a little further the lift will move up or down to where the control is. Then you move it again in that same direction it will not move intil you
get another 1/4 to 1/3 of the way. Anyone know what would cause this? It has bugged me for a long time and no dealer can fix it. These systems cannot be that hard to
repair. They put many new parts in the lift but still does not follow the control like it should. They told me that they could not understand why it would not work but it
is better than it was. I use this tractor mainly to mow and keeping the mower at a constant level is a battle. It is always moving.

If you can't figure it out, try using a check chain to limit the lowest height that the mower can drop to and set the length of the chain to the height that you want to mow at. Then you can just move the control handle all of the way down when you want to mow and all of the way up when you want to transport the mower.

That is good for when I am mowing with it but I also use it for other things like grading, box blading, jib pole, plowing and so forth. I am going to bet that somehow,
somewhere someone knows the answer and knows how to fix it. I bet that if I get it apart and replace the valve, piston rings and a few other parts and adjust everything
properly I bet it will work. It has to be fixable. Their is just not that much to them. I am sure it worked right at some point in it's life, it will again. Something is
bent out of shape or valve leaking, O ring pinched, something like that.

don't know much about them, but, http://www.messicks.com has exploded views of just about everything. getting to the guts is the trick. good luck.

If you don't have one, get an I&T FO-31 aftermarket service manual and take the top cover off and do a full R&R of all of the o-rings and seals, and then follow the "alternate" procedures for all of the control linkage adjustments. The real Ford service manual procedures require special tools that are not readily available, but the I&T manual provides alternate adjustment procedures that do not require the special tools.

Forgot to mention in my previous post that if things cannot be adjusted to within specs, then one or more parts are worn and need replacing.
