3 point hitch mowers

I have a 641 Ford (told that when I bought it, haven't verified per the serial numbers), anyway, looking at a three point hitch finish mower, 72" cut. Seems as though I heard or
saw a post saying the pto on these tractors do not have a high enough rpm to effectively run these units. True or false?

Thanks for any replies.

Agree that you've been told incorrectly.
Nearly all 3 point mowers are designed to run at 540 rpm pto speed and All tractors are designed to put out 540 rpms on the pto - usually about 3/4 throttle. There may be some exceptions. Some tractors can be changed from 540 to 1000 rpm or maybe a tractor that has a front or mid mount pto.
But generally that 540# has been a standard for at least 80 years.

Your 641 should run a 72" mower just fine at 540 rpm PTO speed. The transmission may be a little fast, even in first gear, for cutting tall/heavy brush in one pass though, so if you're cutting tall and/or heavy stuff you may need to do an initial pass with the mower up higher and then go back for a second pass with it down where you want the final cut to be. Or you could do a partial swath, like half of the width of the mower, on each pass.

What does the gear box need for horsepower? That's what you need to look at. I think mine needs 25 hp minimum. Your tractor would work for mine.
