860 12 volt conversion

I've had a nice ole 860 for 8 years with no problems. I recently had an ignition issue and while troubleshooting realized i had a 12 volt conversion. (new to me tractor and thought the 12 volt set up was the way they came). After looking through this forum i basically figured how to get it running again, but noticed my wiring is a mix of i think 6 and 12 volt. I have the 4 prong solenoid and the dimmer switch for a starter. Ammeter and a ballast in the ignition circuit. I want to switch to a volt meter as my ammeter isn't working and figured i would change to volt meter while i was working in the dash. How can i tell if i still have a 6 volt coil or 12? Does it matter and do i still need the ballast?

Ballast resister say it has the old 6 volt coil or it would not be there. If it is working leave it be or you end up trying to fix a problem and end up making a problem. As for a volt meter why when you can just put in another amp meter and not have to redo any wiring. By the way the amp gauge is not factory or should I say they are not factory on the 801 series might be on the 800 series but I do not think so but could be wrong on that

can't argue with your logic Old. Somewhere in my foggy old head i've always associated ammeter with generator and volt meter with alternator. I goggled 860 dashboard and most images came back with ampere gauges,so i'll keep it simple. Thanks for the reply

Ya the 860 being the earlier series may have had a amp gauge and no gas gauge or some such thing. I know the 801 series did not have amp gauges on them but had a fuel gauge and a idiot light for the charging system. But I also have learned that is it isn't broken and you try to fix it it sure as heck will be broken because Murphy always has a way of getting its way
