I have a ford 640 '56 with a 4 speed I am semi restoring. it currently has a 4 speed. ground speed is too fast and I would like a double clutch with live pto. I've been reading that ford 650 had a 5 speed with a reduced first gear and double clutch with live pto. information on this seems limited. how available are these and how bad a job is it to convert and where might I find one? just seems like 650's are hard to find
thanks

The 650 did not have live PTO but it did have a 5 speed. It would be a simple switch over. But by the time you did all that you would be $$ ahead to sell what you have and buy a 660 or even better a 661 or even a 860 or 861. The 660/661 have the 5 speed and live PTO and so does the 860/861. To try to make your a 5 speed with the double clutch you would have 3 times as much in it then it would be worth and also it would take a good 10 plus hours to do all the work

As old has said, models in the hundred and '01 series with a 5 in the middle digit have the 5 speed transmission but do not have the live PTO with the double clutch. Only the models with a 6 as the middle digit have the 5 speed transmission with live PTO and the double clutch.

I've never used a Ford 5 speed with a brush hog but I've heard that they are not that much slower than the 4 speed in first gear.

If you want to stay with that size tractor I would keep my eye out for a 3 cylinder 2000 or 3000 with a 6 or 8 speed transmission to get a slower ground speed. Or you could look for a 671 or 681, or a 4 cylinder 2000 with the Select-O-Speed transmission, as those had 10 speeds with a very slow first gear and independent PTO, which is even better than live PTO as far as I'm concerned.

Live PTO is nice. 1st gear in the 5 speed is not an awful lot better then then the 4 speed though. With the engine at PTO
speed, 1st with the 5 speed runs 2.2 MPH and with the 4 speed it runs 2.5 MPH. I just got done brush-hogging in some rough
terrain in the woods with my 641. TOO fast in 1st, but not much I can do about it. My IH B275 can run 1 MPH in low-low which
is MUCH better. Same with my Ferguson TO35.
