1700 top link

I traded for a 1700 Ford tractor a couple of months back and haven't used it but twice just to bush-hog some with, when I got the tractor it didn't have the top link with it I've been using one off of my 8N tractor, problem is that the implement is not raising high enough and I believe it's because the top link I'm using may be too long, it's just a "standard" top link from TSC, do I need a shorter top link and if so what length ?

Most top links these days are adjustable in length, but they do come in different length ranges. The main question is, can the top link be adjust so that the mower is level when it is at the height that you want to cut at? If so, and it still doesn't lift as high as you would like, then switching to a shorter top link to get the height that you want may cause the mower to not be level when you are mowing.

Most mowers have a few different configurations for the frame that connects to the 3 point lift arms and top link, so if yours has adjustments there, maybe a combination of a different configuration on the mower frame plus a different top link will give you the height that you want when lifted while still allowing the mower to be level when it is down at mowing height.

I've hooked a 5' bush-hog squealer
behind it and there are no adjustments
on this bush-hog, I know what your
saying though. The 1700 can handle the
5' as long as you don't get into thick
stuff but can't lift it high enough to
load tractor and bush-hog on trailer if
I wanted to, I've seen smaller
implements that have mutiple lift pin
heights, that's probably what the little
1700 needs, all of my equipment is too big for this little work horse, it needs to find a new home

Most small tractors sold these days with shorter than standard lower lift arms like those are advertised as "limited cat I".

Height from hog deck up to pins sure does look like a lot more than on mine, by probably two to one.

(quoted from post at 09:10:06 08/11/17) Try shortening that chain a little. Should be able to lift it higher then :)

Shortening the chain will only cause the rear of the mower to lift higher, and that is probably already higher than the front when it is lifted anyway. The front of the mower up by the rear wheels is where he needs it higher to get it on and off a trailer.

After looking at your picture I did some thinking. Would it be possible to remove that one frame piece that goes from both sides of the deck up to the other top frame piece that the top link connects to? Then the lower holes of that upper frame piece as well as the lower lift arms could be lowered down and connect directly to the deck where the piece that was removed used to connect. That might change the geometry to be able to lift it higher. Just make sure that doing that won't shorten the distance from the tractor to the gearbox on the deck too much such that the PTO drive shaft isn't pushing in on the tractor PTO, as that can cause issues.

The reason I made that last suggestion is because the way it is now the lift arms aren't anywhere near their lowest possible position when the deck is on the ground so you're losing about half of the total vertical range of motion as it is, but if you change it so that the lower arms connect down at the deck itself then the mower will be as far off the ground as the lower arms are now when the arms are back up at that position and the deck should go even higher as you raise the arms from there.

Sean, I'm not going to alter the lift
pin locations on the bush-hog, me and
you are on the same page, the lift pins
are situated too high on this implement
for the little 1700 to lift it any
higher, with hog sitting on the ground
the lift arms are already in a partially lifted
position on the 1700, if I keep the
little 1700 I will look for another
bush-hog that has lower lift pin mounts,
it's a great little tractor but I don't
have anything readily available to hook
up behind it, probably going to trade it
off or sell it

Probably for the best. According to the Bush Hog web site, the 5' Squealer is rated for 25 to 40 PTO hp, and that 1700 only has 23.
