Ford 3000 transmission "oil spill"

I got a 1969 Ford 3000 Diesel that runs great. I started a bit of shredding this morning and noticed oil seeping out of my gear selector and onto the base plate. I opened the filler cap and the oil was right up to the top. After starting it, the oil started swirling. I hope someone can make sense of my description. Is it possible for the rear axle to leak into the transmission and fill it up?
Thanks for any and all replies.

Neither the transmission nor the rear axle should be filled that high, and there's nothing that I can think of that would cause a pressure differential to cause the rear end to lose fluid to the pont of causing the transmission to overflow even if the seal is leaking. I would check the level of the rear end fluid just to be sure, but I don't think that could be it. Does the fluid in the transmission look like chocolate milk or a chocolate milk shake?

I went ahead and drained the fluid in both cavities and got 1 and a half 5 gallon buckets out of the transmission and a bit less than half a 5 gallon bucket out of the rear. I think the seal must be leaking , as that is the only logical explanation for it. To make sure, I refilled both cavities to their mark and will do a bit of shredding over the next few days. I will soon see if the transmission fills up again. The oil was a bit milky from condensation. I see this quite often in my Dozer as well. Thanks for the reply.
