1964 Ford 2000 leak from PTO shaft

Folks sorry for the repeat but thought I'd get better response with new thread.
I have 1964 Ford 2000 gas tractor w/4 speed trans. I've recently noticed a slow leak coming from the PTO shaft. I've had a slow leak from the inspection plate cover for awhile and just keep adding fluid as needed. I'm told I probably have a seal leak inside trans but won't be able to stop/split tractor until probably next year (time/money). Diff and lift fluid are good and remain constant while trans fluid has to be added on occasion.
My question is can I continue to use tractor doing light/medium work (mowing/dragging pastures once a month, light harrowing in grass seed, etc) or am I heading for train wreck ?

Hey Perry,
I just looked at my what I believe is a late 60's 2000 and my '52N. I'm not sure on the 2000, but it has the same bolt pattern around the PTO shaft plate as the 8N, 4 bolts to remove the seal, bearing and shaft. On the 8N, if you have clean oil in the diff / Tranny and don't want to drain it, put the rear wheels up on ramps, take out the 4 bolts, and hopefully the unit will slide out. then you can get to the bearing and seal. Press the bearing off, take the old seal off, and assemble in reverse order. Only problem may be if the PTO shaft has been over torqued with a PTO driven implement and the shaft has a twist, then it will be a problem.
As far as your tranny inspection plate, mine has a square headed plug to check the level, no dip stick. My plate is high up on the tranny case with the plug a bit lower. Is it possible that you're overfilling it?
At any rate, I've operated the 8N and bush hog for over 3 years with a PTO shaft leak, I just keep a check on the oil level and add as needed.

Hope the helps,
Roger

Appreciate it Roger. a couple of other fellers said the same thing (keep fluids up and rolling on". From what others have said for fluid to be leaking from PTO has to be from diff yet my diff fluid level shows good but again may just be a ssslllooowww leak so not showing low yet? anyway thanks for the advice and barring issues hopefully I can get through winter then crack it open and replace seals and such!

unless there is magic or withcraft involved, if you have oil leaking out the worn PTO seal, it comes from none other than the
DIFFY!

The pto seal is CRAZY easy to change out on a prior 4 cyl with non SOS tranny.
