And so it begins...

Next off comes the tank, radiator, muffler, dash cowling and steering wheel. Never had to take off a steering wheel before. Do you need a puller after removing nut?

Going to give it the cleaning of it's life after a scrape down and good wire wheeling. A good coat of primer and a couple coats of paint. Want to get it all prettied up like it used to be. Then after looking at it for a few months, my wife says it will be like the previous four. I'll get bored with it and sell it, then look for another one to fix up. I don't really use it for anything more then cleaning the driveway when it snows enough. I tell her this one is different, it's as mechanically sound as the day it rolled out of factory and I'm keeping it! She says, "tell me that in about 3 months". Thing is, she's probably right......

Ultradog,You would really freak out in my shop then. We have at least 16 jackstands, of all sizes and descriptions. There are 3 tractors sitting on part of them now. It's not unusual to see a tri-axle dump truck or a lowboy or whatever sitting on them at any time in my shop.We use them for everything and have never had an accident with one. We have had crib blocks to crush, creel and kick out over the years though.

I agree this looks unsafe. The offset front support needs to be repositioned to the tractor centerline.

to answer your question, yes, in all likelihood you'll need a puller to get the steering wheel off - - they can be difficult, perhaps you'll be lucky - -

this would be a great time to inspect and clean the brakes...

hank you pomester for answering the man's question, instead of offering 'editorial comments'. This stuff seems to be the trend lately.....I guess spurred by 'fake news'?
Yes, I know, that I didn't answer his question, but it has already been answered & someone needed to point out the non-answers that have become so common lately. I guess some can't remain silent even when they have no answers.

Yup, Gear puller. A little Kroil or BP Blaster might help. I have a good size puller and I just take the prongs off and bolt underneath see photo.

The focus of Tom's post is his project -
tearing apart his tractor for a repaint.
If his post had simply been a question about
removing the steering wheel there would be
no reason to post all the photos - none of
which pertain directly to his question.
Pictures, as you probably know, are worth
1000 words.
What you may not know is they also invite
1000 comments.
My comment, which seems to be the one that
set your teeth on edge, was meant to help
Tom do his project in a safe manner.
Your comment was not meant to help Tom at
all. And all it accomplished was to
reinforce our opinion that you are mostly
just a sanctimonious, irritable old lout.

And while your at the STEERING WHEEL, put some lubrication in that steering gear box. I'll be it is needing it.

ctually, it looks like it brought out the real 'dog'. :)

Ultradog's comments were referring to safety, which is something none of us should ever take for granted, and should be welcomed by all. I've
seen more than one vehicle slide off of jack stands after the rig was being pried/pulled and/or banged on. Fortunately, none of these
incidents resulted in any serious accidents. Rick's comment about the offset jackstand in the front was also spot on.

It reminds me of the saying "Better safe than sorry".

I've found getting the steering wheel off a bearing separator usually works best for me. If it is plastic before I began removal I would source a new one. You'll likely tear it up if it is in fact plastic.

The steering wheel will pop right off, Tom.

I replaced it and anti seized the splines when I installed the new one. I also did not over tighten the nut

Loosen the nut a few turns. Do not remove it. Stand on the footboards and pull hard with both hands. You might need to strike it from below with the palm or your hand a couple of times.

The oil in the steering box was replenished and it does not leak.

You were right. Popped right off! I just had to bump it a little with a puller. Didn't want to get up on the floorboards while it's on jack stands. Pulled the tank also. Now I just need to see if I can get the top dash with gauges off without removing throttle rod. Looks like it may slip thru grommet after I finagle it over steering wheel shaft.

This is not an answer to the problem stated. This is a thank you to you guys who gave me some valuable tips on removing a steering
wheel. Both the bearing separator and dismantling the puller are superb ideas; the bearing puller, especially for today's wheels that are
completely covered in plastic, even underneath where you hook the tangs of the puller normally and would otherwise rip the soft coating.
