Ford 3000 Tachometer

After I got the spark plugs fixed, I said I was going on to the gauges and lights in the dash. The proofreader seemed like an easy place to start, so I did. When I undid the cable at the back of the generator, it came off as in picture...the cable off the piece I am holding with the pliers off the gear drive unit. Should that piece I'm holding with pliers be attached to cable and not a separate piece? While I had it apart, I decided to remove unit and clean it, grease it and put it back together. The very first thing I did was remove the generator LONG bolt (well, it was right next to the one that needed taken off!) Didn't realize it till I had it out and it was much longer, I felt a nightmare coming on. Now I can't get that long bolt to screw back in to generator....any ideas?

Not sure about the long bolt but yes the part you have should be attached to the tach cable. You need a new cable.

If you are going to remove the starter you should be able to get that bolt back in, guessing it's one that holds the starter together.

Chris...long bolt? the long screw that holds the genny together? yes, you have to twist the generator a bit to line up the holes.. make sure the long screw is not at an angle... takes a couple of tries, but once you line it up, it screws in easily.

Yes the generator bolt, it didn't appear to have moved,
but I will try again! Sheesh I can't believe I took it loose to begin with! I'm not really blonde, but dishwater must be close enough for some of the fixes I get myself into!!!!!

yep... been there, dun it... The Long long screw will not line up with the threads do to gravity, sign of the moon and location of venus to mars... so you have to hold your mouth just right, squint in the left eye, stand on one foot while humming the star spangle banner. eventually you will actually get the bolt and threaded hole to meet and then the magic will happen. Its not rocket science but will surely test your patience. If OJ can get paroled, you will get it back in.

Great instructions! As these mishaps occur, I have been heard to say "Why does everything have to be so hard?" That little voice comes back with.... "because if it was easy, it wouldn't be any fun." Then I mutter under my breath..." I'd like to try it easy once in awhile!"

emove generator from tractor, stand on pulley, and it will be easy. :)

Even when I have the gen in a vice after a rebuild, its still a bit tricky... long bolt, gravity, and murphy work against you.. but if you keep trying, it will tire out and finally give in. but then the gen is horizontal in the vice and not vertical.

I got the new cable and decided to pull it through with old one. My tape didn't hold, and now I'm trying to figure out how it was routed...OMG if it's not one thing it's another! As I said, if it was easy it wouldn't be any fun. Grrrrrr

It just goes over the top of the fuel tank right into the rear of the cluster. Remove the cluster, mine isn't tied to anything other than the ends. Even with the hood on you have a more or less straight shot over the top of the tank to the cluster.

I still haven't tried the generator bolt again, because the new cable came in and I thought I'd tackle something easier, something that wouldn't try my patience as much....Well, I tried pulling the new cable with the old one (thought it was a good idea, but tape came undone) and I have no idea how the thing is routed now. So far I've tried a few ways but none gives me the length I need to reach the instrument panel. The new one is exactly the same length as the old one, so it should go. Does anyone have a 3000 they can look at and tell me exactly which way to go??? I've already spent about 4 hrs on it and I am frustrated to say the least. I keep waiting for something to be easy and if it is, I end up making it hard in one way or another. I'm about ready to throw in the towel :(

Don't know how to explain it any better than I did above. I have a 3000 and a 3600 sounds like you are trying to make it more complex than it really is. It's almost a straight shot over the fuel tank, over the top of the engine with a turn down to the rear of the generator.

The easiest way to get that bolt back into the generator is to pull the generator out of the tractor and stand it upright, pulley end down, on the workbench. So why bother trying to get the tach cable connected before you do that? You don't want to run the engine and spin the generator with that bolt not installed anyway so you're not even going to be able to test the tach with the new cable until that is done.

As for routing the cable, pull the instrument cluster out and route the generator end of the cable through the hole in the dash above the fuel tank toward the front of the tractor at a slight angle to the left. You should see it coming out into the engine compartment. Pull it straight through until the instrument cluster end can be connected to the back of the tach and then put the instrument cluster back in place. The cable should have plenty of length at that point. The cable needs to curve upwards slightly and then arc back downwards inside the engine compartment to have the end of the cable line up with the drive on the rear of the generator. You don't want any kinks.

Thank you! You explained it really well, if I can't follow that, I had better hang it up!! Good idea on the bolt first, I don't know what I was thinking!

Thank you for your input! I think women in general get more worked up over something not going right the first time...more of an emotional thing! LOL! I really appreciate everyone's help with my Ford 3000, I couldn't do it without you guys!

Well, pulled the generator off and got the bolt back in! Yay!!! Tonight I'll put it back together with speedometer cable, then hopefully on to the next part of my 3000 project! Thanks again everyone for your help, it is sooooo appreciated!!!~

only caution on the tach cable... is keep it away from the exhaust pipe, no sharp bends, and all is well...

your perseverance will get you there... well done.
