Ford 3400 hard to start when engine is warm

My trusty old 3400 Ford is difficult to start when the engine is warm. It also no longer idles. When it is running it has good power and seems to run
very well.
I had the pump rebuilt about 10 years ago, and the tractor mostly sits unused.
Any ideas?

When was the last time you checked the air cleaners?? I have a friend who has a 4600 and it was not running as it should and I pulled ht air cleaners it has 2 and found they where so dirty that when I dropped them on a board the broad was cover in dust where it had been dropped

A 3400 diesel should have an oil bath air filter, but the advice above still applies. When was the last time that you checked/changed the oil in the air filter, and when was the last time that you cleaned the steel wool packing in it?

Hard to start when warm might also indicate some slightly loose tolerances in the pump that don't show symptoms until it is warm, or slop in the valve train that gets worse when warm.

Thanks for your help and information! I suspect the pump too. I think I will send it to the diesel shop just to make sure.
Thanks again for your response!

Thanks for the advice, I will absolutely check the air cleaners. I really don't use the tractor much, an occasional hayride or use the front end loader to move some cut up trees etc. It is certainly easy to clean the air filter, and I appreciate your help!

Well if the filters are like the 4600 you do not clean them you replace them. My friend said it cost him over $100 to replace the 2 the 4600 has but they where so bad he had no other choice

Old - 3400 is the Utility model in the 3000 series, the 3400 diesel is the same as a 3000 diesel and has the same oil bath air filter.

Thanks again for the info. I converted this tractor to an oil bath a few years ago when the air filter housing rusted apart. I will disassemble it and check it out.
Thanks again!
By the way I fixed the idle by simply adjusting it up a little. Just curious why it changed after 20 years...

Okay but as you know one cannot keep up with every model there is out there so I tell me what I know from what i have been around. My self I prefer the oil bath set up any way a heck of a lot cheaper to do the up keep on

Well think about it parts wear over time so the idle adjusting it self is common due to wear of linkage and other such parts and pieces.
