Where's there a will

A couple of weeks ago I posted that I wondered if I had to spit my 601 to change the inner or front PTO seal. This seal separates the hydraulic reservoir from the rear end housing. Being that its hot and I'm getting lazier, I got it done by pulling the seal in instead of driving it in. Had to take the lift cover off, but that was a lot easier than a split. Used a long piece of 3/4" allthread, some nuts and various dodads and it went pretty smooth. Would have been easier with a helper but still not too bad. Of course, after I got it all done I happen to wonder...if I use 134d hytran in both the rear-end and the hydraulic reservoir did I really need that seal?

That is one reason I run the UTF 303 fluid I buy from Orscheln's and when on sale I get 5gal for $19.99 which is a good bit of savings over the $45 at O'Reilly's. That way if one of the 2 or 3 seals between the rear end and transmission go bad you still have the same grade oil in them all

303 is an older JD spec that does not meet the 134D spec, but there are a lot of third party fluids out there that give themselves the name "303", but actually meet or exceed the 134D spec. You need to look on the label of each to see if any particular one says that it does. I wouldn't think that one that sells for $19.99 for a 5 gallon pail would meet the 134D spec though. The cheapest I've seen on any fluid that does say on the label that it does meet the 134D spec is closer to $30.00 than $20.00.
