Went to start my 960 I hadn't ran for couple years. really hard to get it to start so I pulled the carb, cleaned it out and now it starts really easy. only problem is after 30 seconds it the gov starts to hunt. doesn't blow any smoke out just act like it starts losing rpm and the gov kicks in and brings it right back up. thinking maybe the float is sticking some. what do you think. thanks for reading. norm

Does choking ti hurt or help?? If it help open the main jet adjustment a little bit. If it does not help try garbing the gov to carb rod and hold it and see if you can hold it at an even RPM. If the linkage is binding in any way it can cause that as well as a carb set to lean or maybe you need to service the air cleaner since it has not run in a long time good chance it is full of mud and water

deffinately sounds like fuel starvation.

See if a little choke helps it as Old asks. If yes.. either you missed soemthing in the cleaning, or it is otherwise leaning out.. obstruction in flow, etc.

my linkage seems to be okay. I tried to adjust the float but it seems it is just turning but not doing anything. almost seems as though its stripped. i tried to adjust the air flow but it doesn't change anything. I guess I will be trying to find a carb for it. thanks norm

Tried to adjust the float???????????????? To adjust the float one has to open up the carb and physically bent it to adjust it. Your carb should have 2 adjustments on it. One close to where it bolts to the manifold which is the idle and it should be set at 1.5 turns out form bottom and the other is lower and that is the main jet. If you cannot adjust the main jet and kill the engine by turning it in or get black smoke by turning it out you need to rebuild the carb or if you did rebuild it you missed something

Pinball, before going the high dollar route, how about trying some of the advise given to you here since you came and asked for it.
