I can buy a 172ci 4 cyl blue ford 4000 (62-65)with a sos that doesn't work with power steering for a good price.I also found a guy whom I trust that will sell me a 5 speed and all parts including double clutch fly wheel and misc. parts for a decent price.I put a 5 speed in a 4 cyl 2000 about same year of tractor 20 years ago and wondering if the 2000 and 4000 is about the same ?
whats you guys thoughts and advice
Thanks Joe

If you are happy with the prices and don't mind the project I'd say why not?
A couple of gotchas you may consider are:
They changed the block plate between the 00s and 01s so get the one that came with the 5sp. Also, somewhere in there they changed the spline count on the coupler between the trans and pinion shaft. It's not a big deal to take two couplers to a machine shop and have them make one. But consider it might cost a couple C notes to do that in your equation.
If you did it and the clutch/input shaft in the SOS are good give me a holler.
I might be able to offset some of your costs.

Thats what remember I took 1 coupler and bored it out and then had to press it inside the other and welded it,the tractor ran for 15 or so years.Seems like I had to also change the pto shaft and the lever that engages it. Probably a bunch more that I don't remember. The motor has low hours and starts and runs and sounds good.Well thanks for the info, and if anyone else thoughts or things that have to be changed or modified please let me know
Thanks Joe

In addition to what the others have said, you will need all of the PTO components from the rear axle to go with the 5 speed as well. The S-O-S had independent PTO that was controlled by a hydraulic clutch pack inside the transmission, and the PTO control was a cable up on the dash, while the 5 speed has live PTO driven by the double clutch, and the control was a handle on the left side of the rear axle center housing that controlled a mechanical slide coupler inside the center housing, so make sure those parts come with it as well.
