Ford 3000 tachometer drive on oil pump

Hi

Does anyone know if it is possible to mount the oil pump tach-drive in the old engine block with the threaded hole? I have read somewhere that these could only be mounted in the unthreaded hole (later blocks with the frostplug for sealing)
 
The tractor in question is a 1966 Ford 3000 diesel. The old generator has been replaced with an alternator. I know there are some alternators with tach drives but I cant find it on my side of the pond...
 
My pal Kenny and I thought about building
a cutting tool that centered on the hole
for the oil pump drive gear shaft to bore
out that threaded hole. We would have made
it adjustable with a HSS lathe bit and
turned it with a low speed drill. It would
not have been hard to make.
But looking at an older block we realized
the casting was changed in that location
and there is not enough of a land to bore
it out to the larger size.
Alas. It would have been a great tool to
own, and even loan out to the folks here
who were looking to do as you ask.
An alternative would be to manufacture a
new style tach drive that screws into that
hole but that would be significantly more
work.

Ok, I was hoping the drive would be thinner (its 55 mm OD) than the inner diameter of the threads in there... Suppose a bushing is out of the question too then.

That tool you described might work though, guided by the hole for the pump drive it could work.
 
Does it have an inline or rotary injection pump? If an
inline, a tach drive for a 7000 could be added to the
rear of the pump. Wouldn't require changing the tach
to the newer style like an oil pump drive would.
 
Well,that could do the trick!
I have a Simms inline pump, do you know i these drives are a straight bolt-on to any Simms pump?
I am at sea right now, so I cant check for myself...
