I am looking for a SOS repair man for a Ford 6000. Just bought it this way, has a nice running diesel. Tractor is complete and looks nice, so I'm thinking of repairing it, just using it in the the yard.
The guy said he was spraying with it and the engine kind of loaded down and heard something clank and the tractor stopped moving. He shut it off and restarted it again and took it back to the farm ( about a forty), did the same thing again, but will not move anymore. I did notice today that the PTO is turning yet.
Would like somebody in Wisconsin or anybody may any suggestions on what may have happened?

What does it do with traction disconnect disconnected? If works fine have something in one of planetarys bad. There is 3 pins that hold ring gear and are known to pop out.

Disconnect the TDC as shaun suggested. What does it do as you shift the transmission through the ratios with the engine running at idle?

You should hear a little tonal change on the engine and possibly some hydraulic shift noises (buzzing) in the transmission. The engine should load a bit in all ratios, but more so in the overdrive rations: R2, 3, 4, 7, 8 & 10.

If this proves fine, reconnect the TDC and tell us if there are noises in the rear end with the transmission in any of the reverse or forward drive ratios and engine idling.

A further thought. check to make sure that the TDC didn't just become disengaged on its own. (can you roll the tractor easily with the engine off?)

The previous owner and I, both checked the transmission disconnect. We had to disconnected it when we loaded it on the trailer. I tried going thru all the gears and no sound change or anything, but the engine was not at a idle either. I did hear a small clunk every once in a while between the engine and transmission. He say when it stopped the first time, he said there was some oil coming out between the engine and bell-housing. I don't see any evidence of that happening, but the tractor was parked for two years.
I won't have time to check anything till Monday or so.

OK. You'll have to tell us more when you get to it for any other kind of answer.

If you want my help, I'll want to know the answers to the following questions:

Does the transmission function in any ratio? Reverse and no forwards maybe?

Is the PTO still turning?

What does the transmission do with engine idling and shifter in any other position but park? Does it remain in park? Does it go to neutral? Or does it do something else?

Is the oil level correct and clean?

Hey Larry NCKS! I listened to previous owners Nephew and I think he may have cost me a transmission on the 6000, I'm hoping not! He told me that he drained the transmission from a plug on the bottom of the transmission. He told me to add 12 quarts of Universal Hydraulic oil to the plug in the middle of the foot platform.
Before I did that, Pulled the screen out at the bottom side of the transmission and I got maybe another gallon or so of oil out of that. Will, I then added 12qts to that plug on top of the platform. I don't where to check the oil level for the transmission, so I figured that 12 qts should do before I would try to start the tractor.
Will,I started the tractor the other day and said that transmission wouldn't do anything but the PTO shaft was turning. I looked at the plug under the tractor where he showed that he drained. I think he drained the differential and bet I just added 12 quarts to that instead of the transmission. Now I think I had the engine running with dry a transmission. I have an Operators Manual coming for it and I should have waited for it. I'll have to go an get couple more buckets of oil. Where are fillers for transmission, differential and hydraulics. I think for the hydraulics, there is a tank with a dipstick in it at the front of the tractor.
I didn't run the tractor long but maybe a total 10 minutes, but without oil who knows, it kind of makes me sick!

The transmission filter is internal to the transmission. It requires removing the top cover on the transmission. This is a procedure one doesn't do without knowing the particulars of how to do it and replace it.

There is no differential filter and I don't think a hydraulic filter either.

Oil fill plug for the SOS transmission is also its level plug. This is located on the right side of the transmission and is a pipe plug. It is below and maybe slightly behind your steering column. (I don't remember for sure on the 6000). On the early 2 & 4000 tractors it would be below and near the front of the right side footrest.

11 qts. will fill the transmission. Some will overfill them slightly. 12 qts won't hurt it. Best to either have it on a hillside, right side high, or use a street ell to add oil.
