Rebuilding Ford 841 power steering control valve

Well, after years of putting this off, I'm in the middle of rebuilding the entire steering column. In the process, and not the way I usually work, I was disassembling everything and managed to loose one plunger and one of the balls that are within the p/s control valve. They must have fallen out (onto my pole barn floor - one covered in 3/4" loose stone). A quick glance at the archives and a few parts catalogues are not encouraging. Has anyone overhauled one of these lately and did you take any pictures? It's quite easy to mix up these pieces and I really would like to avoid shelling out over $500 to $600 for a new assembly. Please let me know. Thanks.

Not sure what pics you are looking for. But here is a picture of some balls, spring, and plungers from a 651 PS unit I worked on a few years ago. I got new parts for it from CHN (Messicks)

Is it just me or has anyone else been seeing the "PLEASE UPDATE YOUR ACCOUNT TO ENABLE 3RD PART HOSTING" from photobucket when anyone posts a picture from photobucket lately? I don't see the picture, just a picture of that message.

Funny that the picture shows up just fine for me. But have heard of other people getting that message. Something is up!

I just did some searching. Apparently PhotoBucket wants $400 a year to enable sharing photos on sites like YT. If this continues, I'm out of photobucket.

Ugh! I'm off to find another photo hosting site.

I GET THAT ALSO. I paid them something like $20 a year it did get rid of the adds. I will try a pix...

Hobo, I see your picture fine, but I'm still seeing the "PLEASE UPDATE..." image in Kurt's post.

Kurt - How are you adding your pictures. I use the "Direct" link from Photobucket when I post my pictures and from the URL on Hobo's picture it looks like he does the same. Are you using the "Direct" link, or are you using one of the other URLs that photobucket provides?

I used the IMG link to the right of the photo. I copied that and pasted in the post.

If I can get this linking for $20 a year, I'm in, but at $400 --- forget it.

Kurt - Thanks for getting back to me on this. Your picture didn't appear, but since I posted this, I went back to my I&T manual
and found a detailed description of what has to be done, so that's helpful. I determined that I lost one of the balls and one of
the plungers. I will try searching again with a large magnet, so hopefully that will work. If not, I did a little checking and it
looks like I can at least buy a plunger, but I'm not sure about the ball. I'll have to try Messicks to see if they carry
everything.

I'm pretty sure you cant buy the reaction plungers new. I would get a bright light(the part could be on the tractor somewhere) and a GOOD magnet, maybe a magnifying glass. I believe you can still buy the centering plungers (plain barrel shaped) and springs. If you find the old plunger then you can match the 1 ball bearing you have for a new one. Its amazing how some things travel when they fall. Anyone else out there doing this might want to spread a white sheet under the tractor.

I believe I have a couple of those "reaction plungers" but the balls are mixed up with the thrust bearings in that unit. Thinking the size is not correct The whole unit was a complete rusty mess' They were driven out of there position with a hammer and punch. But with some sand paper and elbow grease might be usable. Will check it out in the morning

I just upgraded my PhotoBucket account to ads free. The IMG link button is now blocked, even with AdFree Plus. So that didn't work. It appears that 3rd party hosting is blocked unless I pay $400 a year. That is not going to happen.

Is the "Direct" link there? If so, use that.

Nope, everything was grayed out.

I understand dat :!:

Good thang I payed up before they sent out the SS troops... :D

I had been have issues with PB for close to a year it took a act of congress to upload a pix... They keep wanting $19 I payed up and life has been good ever since...

Found it. The control valve assy is complete and not apart. Came off the parts steering gear unit. Never used by me. Should keep it as I have 2 PS 801. I will be pressed for time in the next 2 weeks, too. Did you try the magnet to find it. I have one out of a speaker that is on a string and I can move it above the ground and it finds stuff. George

Could you please look at my post on the forum yesterday regarding, golden jubilee hydraulics not staying primed, and let me know what you
think. Thanks Charles
