Ford 2110 LCG SOS Transmission - Ultradog - Help!

Ultradog - Oh wise one...

I have a 2110LCG with an SOS tranny. The PTO clutch is starting to slip. Brush hog spins fine, but my tiller will stop when it hits ground...

I've talked with a couple local dealers, and neither of them have the tools to replace the PTO clutch in the SOS transmission.

Any ideas of someone here in MN that has SOS experience? I'm located near Sandstone. From what I can tell the PTO clutch is housed within the SOS transmission, and requires a 3-way split of the tractor to do the job.

Let me know what you think. I'm thinking I don't have much invested in this tractor, and it may be time to look for a different 8-speed 3000, or at least a different 8-speed tranny for this one.

Thanks,

First thing I'd do is check the cable adjustment. In fact, I'd disconnect the cable and pull on it manually as a test. If that checks out, then pressure tests are in order. Don't assume the worst until you check the simple stuff first.

If the PTO clutch truly is worn out, then the bad news is that it's the last thing to come out of that transmission.

The above tells me you know as much about Select O Speed transmissions as I do...
Do as Bern suggests: try adjusting the cable.
Beyond that I'm not going to be much help. I don't know much about those transmissions and the fellows here will vouch that I don't much like them either.

Yep! Bern is right on target. Common for those to have misadjusted cables resulting in weak clutch engagement. No reason to condemn your clutch until you've done some diagnostics.

Thanks Bern!

By cable adjustment, are you referring to the PTO Control Handle Adjustment listed in part 8 - Select-O-Speed Transmission of the service manual? I've been reading through that section and the adjustment steps makes sense, however I've never rotated the handle, so not sure if it can become out of adjustment on its own or not. I'll try adjusting it this weekend. That might be the issue.

When I have the PTO knob in the "off" position the PTO shaft continues to spin, so either it's out of adjustment (hopefully), or the feathering valve is worn (not good news..).

There is no pto brake on SOS-equipped tractors, (except the 5000) so spinning when the pto is off and no load is considered normal.

The cable can stretch over time which can cause the out of adjustment condition without you having to do anything other than use it normally over time.

Yes, PTO handle adjustment. If I had the tractor here, I'd put it on the dyno, disconnect the PTO cable, yank it out of the cover all the way by hand, and then load the dyno down until the engine stalled. If it stalled the engine, I would know that I found my problem. THEN I would take the handle out and adjust.
