The 4600 steering saga continues

Well, after lot's of cussing, I finally got all the sheet metal, steering wheel, fuel tank, and all the other assorted pieces off the tractor. Followed the IT manual re-sealed, and started to re-assemble. Now, as per the manual... feed in the 28 bearing balls using clean grease. Install the upper half of transfer tube. Now, that sounds simple, but, every time I get the 28 bearings in the housing,(that alone is a wonderful journey) I can't get the top part of the tube back on. No matter how I try to jiggle and worm the top of the tube, it always knocks out 1 or 2 balls and I'm back to square one. Have I over looked some secret known only to the tractor Gods?

I should clarify. I have been using Vaseline to hold the balls. Now, I'm wondering if I should use a general purpose grease.

You simply thread the shaft in, just like you'd thread a bolt into a nut. That's what I do, and I have never had a problem. Just don't jamb
it in there. I also use Vaseline as well. If it's hot, stick it in the fridge for a while first.

Now I'm confused. I thread in the shaft, feeding balls in the tube as the shaft goes in. 20 of the balls go in and the other 8 sit in the feed tube. It's only when I try to put the top of the feed tube on that the 1 or 2 of the balls fall out. Are you sticking the balls to the worm shaft and then threading (carefully) in? I don't see enough clearance for that.
Ever felt like you're in a square room with cement walls and no exit? seems like every turn smacks me in the face. :?: :)

Oh yeah. after going away from the tractor and calming down, I wandered back out and thought, oh well. let's try one more time. Success! for who knows why, everything just went back together (like I knew what I was doing) :D Just finished the last of the seals, and all I have to do is re-install the fuel tank and sheet metal.
I want to thank you guys for the helpful info.
