In the previous thread I was trying to figure out what to do about not being able to purchase a new brake cross shaft. They are back ordered by everyone with no delivery for months.

Decided to try and install Speedi-Sleeves over the pitted seal areas of my existing shaft. This is something almost anyone can do and it actually worked out pretty good. I didn't take any pictures, once I got started I didn't think to grab a camera.

Started by trying to figure exactly where on the shaft the sleeves needed to go. I wanted to make sure the new seals were riding on the sleeves. I stuck a tape in the shaft hole and measured the distance between the outsides of the bushing inserts. In my case it was exactly 8 1/2 inches. This told me how much of the shaft was taken up by the rear end and bushings.

I cleaned up the shaft and marked the 8 1/2" centered between the pitted area where the seals were running. Decided I could install the right hand sleeve with the shaft out of the tractor, install the right seal then install the shaft. I installed the sleeve just using a best guess from my marks as to where the seal would ride. The sleeves are 5/16" wide which gives you a little lee way on the exact position.

Lubed everything up and installed the seal, shaft, washers, felt dust seal and everything on the right hand side including brake peddles. This told me where the shaft would actually be located when everything was back together. I held it in position with plumbers tape warped around the peddles and bolted into one of the foot board holes. Right side is a done deal at this point.

Moved to the other side of the tractor, installed the seal then drove the speedi-sleeve on up to the seal with a piece of pipe that just fit over the shaft. Lubed everything up and while rotating and taping was able to get the sleeve into the seal. Installed the sleeve backwards, with the tear-off flange facing out. Just before it looked like it was too far but I could still get to it I removed the flange. At that point the sleeve was in far enough for the seal to ride on the sleeve so I didn't try to move it in any further.

Installed the felt seal, washer, clutch peddle and break lever. Put 5 gallons of 134 in the rear end and placed a clean piece of cardboard under the rear. That is where it is sitting, if it leaks I will know in the morning but would really be surprised if it does.

Right now I am going to call this a win and another option for repairing a leaking brake cross shaft.
