3600 brake cross shaft back ordered

Just heard from YT parts, the cross shaft is back ordered and could be months away from being able to get one.

The one I have is in pretty rough shape especially where the seals ride. If I had a larger lathe I could turn it down and sleeve it but it won't fit in my lathe, 3/4 head stock through hole.

Have heard of some using JB weld to smooth out shaft sealing surfaces and that might work on this shaft. It only turns in operation the distance the pedal travels. Big problem is it has quite a bit of wear on the clutch side where it contacts the bushing. Doubt JB weld would be strong enough for that.

Any other ideas? A web search didn't come up with anything better than what I have and nothing new I could afford,

Found it in eBay, says it's in stock and should be here sometime next week. Really did try to support this site and do when I can.

Bob, I have over the years replaced many of those shaft seals. The shafts have needed attention more times than not. I have a good friend who welds those shafts up and turns them back to specs on his lathe. Check the shaft bushings also while you are in there.

Not sure if the eBay seller actually has the shaft either, should find out today. If not, any chance I could ship my shaft to your guy?

Watch the spelling of Somethinxtra if you try to send me a message. Normal people usually try to spell it correctly.

As I suspected the eBay seller can't supply the shaft either and no idea of when it might be available. Looks like for now they are all made out of that precious metal unobtainium.

Drop me a note if you think your buddy might help me get this tractor running.

Thanks

Really appreciate your offer to help and have been contemplating my options..

I just ordered two 99112 Speedi-Sleeves, they are for a 1.125 shaft and are 0.313 long after the flange is removed. I am going to clean up the shaft as best I can with file /sand paper / wire brush, install new seals then insert the shaft. With the shaft in place I will install a Speedi-Sleeve from the outside on both sides with the flange facing out. Should be able to get them past the seals without damaging the seals. Just have to figure out a way to keep the shaft in place while I pound the sleeve on.

I sure can't think of any reason Speedi-Sleeves wouldn't work well for that shaft, installing from the outside will keep them out of the bushings and the felt dust seals will compensate for any length issues associated with the sleeves.

All I have to loose is $50.00 for the sleeves and some time.. Maybe come up with a fix for that shaft anyone can do with normal shop tools. Will try to remember to take pictures and update this thread as I progress.
