New guy here, Your forum is a fountain of info. but, I'm stumped by this steering problem. First some tractor info.. the serial number on the housing...
4600
9F11B
A368049

My problem is my steering doesn't resemble most of the other steering sectors that I've looked at when studying how and what to do to re-seal it. For instance, my sector has a metal line on the right hand side with banjo fittings. and the shaft has some kind of rubber splined collar down at the bottom of it. I decided to ask for some help before I dig any further into it and maybe save myself some grief.
Thank you in advance for any help.

9F11B is the Unit Number, and it means that the tractor left the assembly line on June 11, 1979.

A368049 is the serial number.

It should not have "4600" stamped into the same spot where the Unit Number and Serial Number are stamped. If it a 1979 4600 general purpose ag chassis tractor then the model number stamping should start with DA2. And it would most likely have an 8 speed transmission and independent PTO, so the full model number would probably be DA214C if it has a diesel engine and DA224C if it has a gasoline engine.

That is the proper steering gear setup for a 4600 with power steering. The hydraulic control valve and cylinder are inside the lower half of the steering column. That hard hydraulic line on the right side goes from the control valve to the bottom side of the cylinder to provide the power when the piston in the cylinder is moving upward, and since the control valve sits above the piston there doesn't need to be an external line to provide power in the opposite direction. If you've bneen lloking at steering gears that do not have that hard line on the right side, then either they are for a tractor without power steering or they are not for a 4600 model tractor at all (except maybe a 4600 SU). Here is a link to the parts drawing for that steering gear assembly"

You should get yourself a proper service manual specific to that model before you take it apart any further. Either a real Ford Factory Service Manuel or an I&T FO-41 aftermarket service manual. Even the correct service manual will cover many models, so make sure you are looking at the section for a 4600 with power steering.

That is the sreering gear used on 4600. That rubber sleeve is supposed have that steel sleeve in it and should be in top of outer tube with splines on inner shaft just above it. They are notorious for coming apart.

Thank you to Sean and Shaun. The parts drawing is what I was looking for. One thing I have learned after 35+ years as a heavy equipment mechanic is never think I know it all and never be afraid to ask for guidance from others who may be better informed. :D
I was bush hogging and I felt the sudden drop of power steering and saw the fluid coming out the bottom of the sector. I just figured after looking at some other posts, that it was a simple matter of changing the seal. Now, I'm not so sure. the seal that is #18 in the pic does not appear to have blown out, so I have to figure that some of the o-rings below may have ruptured and allowing the fluid to pour out the sector. Looks like I'll have to investigate a little more. I think while I'm at it, I'll be changing the pump filter as this may have become plugged and built up pressure. How's that sound to you?

(quoted from post at 14:39:48 06/20/17) Where exactly is the fluid coming out?

not sure... I just looked down and saw it running off the top of the trans and down off the right side. that would be the opposite side of the Pittman arm. I suppose that would be the cover gasket or possibly the banjo fitting. not sure I can run it now with all the stuff I had to remove to get at this thing. I do know that when it first happened, I filled the pump and before I could get out of the drive, it all ran out again.
