Waiting for new brake cross shaft and seals to arrive did a little searching and ran across this thread.

In it, 2nd post from bottom, Hobo,NC says to install the Right seal after the cross shaft is installed? I do not plan on making or buying seal installation tools, a correct size socket normally works pretty good. However using a socket won't work if I need to install the seal after the shaft is in.

Guess my question is whats the actual problem with installing the shaft with both seals in place?

You stand a chance of damaging the lip on the seal. You will be pushing the shaft again the lip on one side more than likely you will roll the lip out.

You could install the shaft push the seal on the shaft move the shaft in enoufh to drive the seal in. If it has a key way the slot could cut the seal make a seal protector of some sort.

Thanks a bunch, now I see why you say install the seal after installing the shaft. It does have a key slot that will need to pass through the seal regardless of how it's installed. I have some really thin shim stock, I'll figure something out.

There's enough of a chamfer on the shaft that you don't need to worry about installing the seal after the shaft. Think about it: You don't
have a choice on the LH side, do you? Drive the seals in place, wrap one layer of electrical tape over the keyway if it makes you feel a
little better, lube it up, and stick that shaft in.

No, you don't have a choice on the LH side, but you're not sliding the shaft into the lip side of the seal from that side.

I am positive you could deal with it after you realized this is not going real good but not the average DIY'er

True, but once again, there's plenty of chamfer on that shaft for this seal lip rolling concern to be a non-issue. I've installed literally
dozens of these brake cross shaft seals before the shaft itself, and I've never had an issue. Lube the shaft, twist it slightly back and
forth as you shove it in, and it's all good.
