Having trouble decoding my 4600 model number.
It's stamped DS124C.

For the the life of me I can't decode the "S"

Please help my
Thanks

Yup, 4600 SU. It should have a swept back front axle with radius rods and double sided steering like the 2600 and 3600 models, but the double reduction rear axle with inboard wet brakes like the regular 4600.

The 1 in DS1 says that it is an early one, as they switched to DS2 somewhere around November of 1976. So yours was made between January of 1975 and November of 1976.

Ok thanks.

Maybe some needs to update the secret decoder ring.

Here's the rest of the numbers.

DS124C
6D23B
C499510

Thanks
Steve

Sean, where are you getting a January 1975 start
date for x600 production? (Not trying to start an
argument... just asking. ) Pretty much everything
I've seen has the x600's starting in late '75 as '76
models. My 7000 has a build date of July '75.
Seems VERY unlikely to have anywhere near that
much overlap in series production.

fordfarmer, just going by what the parts site says in terms of production runs:

(4600) - 3 CYL AG TRACTOR ALL PURPOSE (1/75-12/81)
(4600SU) - 3 CYL SPECIAL UTILITY TRACTOR (1/75-7/81)

I do know that they continued making thousand series tractors partway through 1975 and started the individual x600 models staggered through the year, so there was some overlap, but according to the parts site the thousand series were officially made form 1965 through 1974:

(4000 - SERIES) - 3 CYL TRACTOR (1/65-12/74)
(4140) - 3 CYL SPECIAL UTILITY TRACTOR (1/65-12/74)

and the x600's are all listed as starting on 1/1/1975, so I use those dates so as to not confuse folks.

Makes sense. My 4600 is an '80 model, and the
7600 is a '77 (Dec. '76 build date), so no clarification
from them.
'll have to dig through my literature. Seems like there
was a "New Models For 1976" showing the x600's.
When looking up parts for my 4-cylinder 2000, I
noticed the parts site listed them as 1/61 through
12/64. That's the only place I've ever seen the 4-
cylinder 2/4000 listed as starting that early. Could
be mistakes there, too.

The first 4 cylinder 2000 & 4000 models were Industrial models, and were introduced in 1961 to replace the 1801 series. The ag models replaced the 3 digit '01 series in 1963. The heavy duty Industrial variant of the 4000 still had the same cast egg crate grill as the 1801.

DS254C:

DS2 - 4600 SU made after November 1976 (before that date they used DS1)
5 is a diesel engine with horizontal exhaust
4 is independent 540 rpm PTO
C is an 8 speed transmission
