Ford 5600 runs and turns off

Greetings,
I have a ford 5600 and it was running great and then starting ideleling strangely then would die. I filled the tank with fresh diesel bc I thought maybe I was empty. After that I would get it started but it would only run for about 5-10 min then die and I would have to use starting fluid to get it back going and it would only last for the same time. Now it will not stay running at all. It has a new battery and so I feel it is not getting diesal. Figure it's the pump or a clogged injector about to start messing with it, I would love any informtation on trouble shooting the issue as I have never had the mess with this part of the tractor much other then change the fuel filter. As of now there is gas in the tank and fuel going to the filter as I unscrewed it. Thank you -Tim

Have you replaced the filter?
Did you unscrew the filter or loosen the bleeder screw?
Always do the simple things first, replace the fuel filter and check to see if you have good fuel flow to the pump.
If the tank screen gets restricted you may have some fuel going to the pump but not enough to keep the engine operating properly.

Battery should make no difference, fuel is mechanical stop.

I would also suspect a clogged fuel tank outlet.

If that is an inline pump with crankcase, service it while you are at it.

I have a fried who has a 4600 ford diesel that would pretty much do the same thing. The problem was the fuel inlet in the tank has lost it stand tube and was sucking junk into it that was in the tank and stop things up. Then I had to start it with starter fluid just to have it run for a few minutes. Pull the inlet out of the tank and replaced it with a new one with stand tube and he has not had any problems since

When my 9000 was doing that it was because the line was nearly plugged where the return line tees in. Some fuel getting to the filter does not mean that there will be enough for it to keep running.

Again, I do not think the Simms pump is the issue, but make sure you service it, drain the sump and refill with same oil you use in engine every oil change.

YUP> 2 most common starting/running problems, TANK SCREEN or Lift pump..
& YOU GOTTA change/ fill the pump w/ oil.. TO THE PROPER LEVEL..
