6700 steering

Bought a rough 6700 at a consignment auction last week. Drove it home 35 miles pulling a 6rn planter. herded it home would describe it better. . It drove like an older tractor with a real worn steering sector. Has a half turn or more of slop between turning one way or the other. Wanted to wander this way and that. haven't done much troubleshooting yet. Checked the tierod and cylinder linkages and they are tight and has a slight amount of toein. Steering pump is weak but it steers reasonably well as long as you are moving. The only thing left is the steering motor. Is there a way to test this, or should it just be changed given the symtoms.? Or could there be slop in some of mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the steering motor.? thanks for any insight you may have on this.

The only steering motor that I ever got into had virtually no linkage to it. I think that it was a hex socket on the top of the motor and the equivalent of a bolt head from the wheel. I agree that it sounds like the motor.

I've had more issues with steering cylinders bypassing than with bad steering motors
I start there first, also check all of the tie rods, was looking at a tractor last year for possible purchase, the tie rods where tight but would rotate in their housings causing lots of lost motion in the wheel, it needed every tie rod replaced, that and a couple other issues stopped the purchase.

Could also be lazy pump flow due to an old filter and dirty oil. Swap them out first, then look at the cylinder.

Thanks for the replies. Will start by changing the filter and then check out cylinder before getting into the steering motor.

I've never seen one of those motors fail... other than the large body seal leaking on them... but that doesn't cause 1/2 a turn of slop in the wheel.
As suggested, change the oil and filter first, just because. Then see what the cylinder is doing. More than likely it will be bypassing.
