Ford 8700 AC idler pulley

Got a new to me 8700, guy says it likes to throw the AC belt. It does flop around a lot, even with a new belt.

Searching the forums, this seems to be a common problem.

Saw several posts about putting in an idler pulley, is this a New Holland part/retrofit? If it is, I can't find it online. Anybody got a part number?

Or is this a homebrew bracket...if it is, where/how did you mount it?

Bought this tractor to bale hay, don't need to be replacing belts while I'm doing that

Thanks

Fred

Hi Fred

Had a 7700 might have same compressor it sits front left of engine and would do the same thing. On the mounting bracket compressor was bolted from underneath and difficult to get the belt square. So I welded some flat vertical on the outside face of the bracket drilled holes and used I think 3/8 bolts with lock nuts located in two holes in the compressor. This meant I could get good tension on the belt and adjust it square to the other pulley. End of problem. Hope that helps Matt

I don't recall ever seeing this issue in my area, so I suspect you're just not getting the belt tight enough. If you look in the owner's manual, it actually shows using a claw hammer against a carriage bolt to pull the compressor out to tighten the belt.

Yes common problem on 87/9700 tractors with the York compressor. Make sure the compressor is straight, move it close to the engine and put on the shortest belt you can get on it. The green HD belts from Napa seem to stay on better. Then you tighten it with the claw hammer like bern described. I had one customer that would start the belt on the pulley hold it there with the hammer handle then have his helper bump the starter to roll the belt on.

Common on the 6700 /7700s as well..

pretty sure it was a ford retrofit to add the extra pulley. It stopped the bouncing of the long belt, with the irregular pulsing of the york/tucemseh compressors...

I had painted my ac belt bright red, so I could find it in the field.

Later I learn that it only threw the belt at 1300 rpms+-.. so I would wait to the engine was at 1900 before turning on the compressor... and then turn off the compressor before cutting the throttle. This solved the problem...however had had several tractors with the ford retrofit pulley, and they worked well.

yeah,, its a ford part... although these show a long slot vrs the early ones having a pivot offset shaft on the pulley mount... but thats the later ones... pretty pricey but the hd ac belts are about 40 bucks a piece if you get a gates hd version. The lightweight belts didnt last a week on the a/c systems on this model. The later sanden compressors fixed the vibration problem and the pulley was not needed.

I'm looking at the Messicks site, and while they show that part, I'm not really sure where it goes.

Although I think I'm gonna try Matt's solution first...has the advantage of cheap.

And so you're saying a standard $11 Gates A53 High power belt isn't gonna last? Need a better one? What do you suggest?

Just trying to head off problems before they happen while I'm trying to bale.

Thanks

Fred

I have been paying a whole lot more than 11 bucks for the gates high power belt. Great price!! I'll need to shop better.

$11.99 at O'Reillys

your Oreillys is cheaper than mine.. I get $32.99 for my Ford 6700 a/c belt. Its a [size=18:51ff7bf53b]9545HD[/size:51ff7bf53b] gates belt... although they show a different belt for the 7700, and 8700 series for the same compressor. I would have sworn it would be the same belt for all as the compressor is mounted in the same place and feeds of the same pulleys?? curious??

Looks like you're buying a stouter belt than I am, that's the difference in price.

Don't know if you have Amazon prime or not, but check this out, $13.76, I'm gonna order one just to have it
while I'm figuring out this AC

And 776 pages of catalog for belts...wow
