Last month went to start the 960 ,just kept spinning over ,not firing up. Cleaned the points started right up. Had been driven 3-4 days earlier. 2 days ago it's the 640's turn to not start. Same fix. What's up with that ? Wife thinks all the rain and humidity ?

Could be moisture, and/or poor quality points.
If they have a plastic rubbing block, replace them.
Quality points will have a phenolic rubbing block.
Premium points will have that and be vented.

This set has a plastic rubbing block and you can see how badly it is worn.

Will check em after church
tomorrow. I think we got the
points at Napa. Maybe need to find
a better place to get em.

We park em under a lean to on the barn so technically they are outside. Not rained on but .......

Bingo, Royse.

Good contact sets are increasingly difficult to find.

The coatings on the cheap sets are so thin that corrosion is quick to form, causing a no start condition after even relatively short periods of non use. I burnish them with an IBM card (have a stack for just such use). Using a point file, even once will remove the coatings making the situation much worse.

I haven't looked for decent sets lately as I have a supply. Don't know if NAPA still offers decent sets.

Napa - get the Echlin brand, they will last. That's all I ever used in my 850 and they lasted long enough I cannot recall the last time I replaced them. They were able to look them up at the counter in the ag parts book at the napa distribution warehouse/store in this area. Unless they changed the design, seemed to me to be the best quality you could get for ignition parts for these tractors.

Grandpa, your shed will not keep the humidity out unless you have AC in it.
I agree with this statement showcrop. It would not have 60 years ago either.
I believe if the quality of points then were what they are now, people would have stuck with horses.
A lot more feed and labor, but far more dependable than some new points!
