4610 Steering Problems Solved

We had a 4610 come into the shop with the side cover gasket blown between the bolts on the steering sector. Replaced it and a week later it was back with the top seal leaking. Pulled the sector and disassembled it. Found that the cylinder was badly scored, from what I don't have a clue. The piston is only sealed with one teflon ring.New Holland wants roughly $1250.00 for this housing. Took it to the guy that bores and sleeves my Ford engines and asked him if he could sleeve this, He said it should't be a problem.Got it back yesterday morning and it's back on the tractor.Has anyone else done this or needs it done?

Bern,What do you feel that the problem was then? This is the late style sector with the teflon rings on the control valve and piston. Everything looked good except the scoring in the cylinder.Side plate is not warped. pump pressure is good. Sleeve job was $300.00.

When you say leaks, I assume you mean external ones where oil drips onto the ground. Those PS boxes are notorious leakers, not because of a poor design necessarily, but rather because the system runs so hot. I understand that your 4610 should have a cooler on it, but even then, these Ford PS systems run so hot that it takes a toll on the seals over time. Leaking steering motor seals on TW tractors are an excellent example.

This is a 4 wd tractor with a loader used to feed round bales in mud up to your knees, Think about the strain on it..As far as the TWs I have repaired a few of those too.

The blown side cover gasket is certainly due to the strain of the loader and 4WD for sure. All of the other external leaks can be traced to high operating temperatures. In normal conditions, static o-rings should never leak.

I always thought that side cover gasket blew when there was a problem with the control valve. At one time those gaskets were available as metal gaskets. Now they've gone back to paper ones

All I know was the tractor was very hard to steer and kept blowing side cover gaskets. This is the late model sector with 3 teflon rings on the valve and one on the piston. The Bore in the cylinder was badly scored with grooves from the top to the bottom. We resleeved it and replaced the teflon rings and you can now steer it with one finger. My theory is if the pressure was bypassing the seal ring on the piston,it would be no different than a seal blown on a hydraulic cylinder.
