Running Hot

Got a 1971 Ford 4400. Running a little hot dont trust gauges But after a long run the radiator gurggles and overflows. thought I would flush and change fluid and thermostat so opened up the thermostat and it wasnt there. gonna get one today but lastnight I thought i woulda go aheead and flush and then replace the thermo today. When i cranked up the lower hose collapsed and does it every time. before I put the flush in i could run water through the block and the radiator and when i drained the old antifreeze it looked fine. I am nervous of a bigger problem but everything seems fine. is this just because no thermostat is installed? should i get cap, hoses and themostat. oh and btw when i ran flush for 15-20min I stayed around 180. belt is tight but will whine at high rpms is that related?

would replace that, likely soft, lower hose. Many have wire coil inside to prevent collapse. Use long stem meat thermometer in radiator neck to check temp gauge.

Try replacing the lower hose first with the correct molded hose, if the new hose sucks in then your radiator isn't flowing properly and will need to be cleaned or replaced.

I would say you found the problem. One was no thermostat... but the primary was the collapsing hose. Install a new hose and assuming this is a diesel.. then a 188 deg thermostat. Flush the system as planned. Then see what happens. More than likely you will have cured the problem.

Had a 1983 2110 that was getting hot. Flushed the rad and block. boil tested the thermostat and it was good. Ended up being the bearings were worn out on the water pump. replaced water pump and all has been good every since.

Check the water pump bearings. Any wobble replace it.

Also clean out the rad cooling fins using low pressure air or water. If these get clogged up not allowing air to flow will contribute to overheating as well.
