641 diesel return line

The original subject was "Re: 841 diesel return line".

Looks like I am a bit late to this discussion but found it after searching if I could buy a new diesel return line fitting that goes into the bottom of the tank. My standpipe broke off down inside the short pipe at the base of the fitting. Not sure if there is any fix for that?? Does anyone sell new ones or have a good fix? What happens if that small line back to the block is just plugged?

You can't plug it. Excess fuel has to have somewhere to go. Sorry, I don't know what's available to fix that.

Yea, thanks Larry. After reading a few more old posts I realize that the fuel needs to escape. Not sure how much fuel flows back from the
injectors?? If I can't fix the tall line inside, I wonder if the fuel from the injectors could be sent to a small resevoir? Amazed at how many parts
are still made but something as critical as this no one offers.

My small diamond long tube was loose in the fitting. I drilled it out so that it would go right through. Then I put a bead of jB weld around the tube with it sticking out the bottom. Then I pulled it back up in so that the JB not only slipped in to the hole a little bit also left a kind of "bead around it. After the JB cured, the fitting on the line threaded into thole and snugged up against the JB to seal it nicely. Hope this makes sense.

Thanks. This makes perfect sense. The bottom end of my long tube has a bit of a flange on the bottom already where it came apart.. If I make
the hole small enough it should slide up through the fitting with the flange catching it from going all the way through. JB weld should then hold.

From what I remember I had run a tap down and threaded where the standpipe had broken off and threaded a piece of brake line in place of the old pipe, make it the right height so it is above the fuel level in the tank. That is what I can remember, I have done a lot since then. Hope this helps.

Took the suggestion and drilled out the hole with an 1/8 in drill bit. Long standpipe fit perfectly up through from the bottom. The end of the standpipe was actually flanged where it had broken off so the flange catches on the 1/8 in hole and doesn't allow it to go all the way through. Plan on putting a bit of JB weld marine on it tomorrow and see if it will hold. The threaded fitting then comes up from underneath and holds the whole thing in.

I'm not familiar w/ your EXACT setup BUT.. I do know pumps & injectors & routing.
Some manuf. ran the inj. return back into the inlet w/ a T.. some back to the filter & some back to the fuel tank..
Take your pick on the easiest one for you.. Just DONT block it off..
IF yours is one that goes back to the filter head & its broken or leaking, you could be sucking air into the system, so watch out for that.. Good luck.. TPG
