1956 Ford 640 pto doesn't work

We have a 56 Ford 640 here, I believe it's a 56 640 because the serial number is 621 on top then 83149 under it and it's 4 speed trans, and the pto does not engage. It has a backhoe on it and the hyd pump is bolted on the the pto and that's what drives the pump for the backhoe. Was using it one day and shut it down like normal. The next day the pto would not engage. When you move the handle to engage the pto you feel it trying to engage like the gears bump but it doesn't engage and the hoe is halfway in the ground. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That would be a 601 series tractor and the 621 is the model number of the tractor. The number under the 621 is the serial number.
As for the PTO not working you need to pull the PTO shift cover plate off and make sure the coupler is still got and that the shiftier in fact moves the coupler to engage the PTO. The clutch also has to be engaged for the PTO to work on that since it does not have a live PTO. Also the 601 series was made form 1958 to 1962

83419 would be a 1956 serial number if it was a hundred series tractor, but as old says, the model of your tractor is a 621, which is part of the '01 series, and 83419 would be a 1959 serial number for an '01 series tractor, as they started over at serial number 1001 when they switched from the hundred series to the '01 series.

I see, ok. So on the left side by your foot where the lever is for the pto engagement take the 6 or 8 bolts out and remove the cover to see what's happening? Nothing will fall out or no special measures need to be taken to remove that cover besides possibly drain oil? I've never worked on one of these but I thought possibly a snap ring or something may have popped off an engagement gear and wouldn't let something slide on a shaft properly or something... sorry my posts are always asking for help but I have only been playing with these old tractors for a year now and don't know terribly much about them and have a 59 power major Diesel giving me a hard time too at the moment and a case vac but I now see that may be my own fault. I used modern oil in the tractor now I have every seal leaking everywhere including the rear main that when it warms up will empty the motor in about 15 min... thanks again.

Could his clutch need adjustment or be worn out and needs replaced? I've got a clutch that's just about worn out and it displays the same symptoms...I can try to engage the PTO lever while the clutch pedal is depressed but it will only go up against the spinning gear and not engage (I can feel/hear the clicking sounds of the gear teeth clicking).

If his and your clutch is like that trying to shift into a drive gear will also be hard to do since the transmission gears would also grind

If all is as it should be nothing will fall out and little to no oil will leak out unless way over full. Now if say the PTO coupler is broken or the shift fork is broken something could fall out or more likely have fallen into to the oil sump area. It would be a very good idea to get your self an I-T manual FO-20 is I remember the manual number right

Ok, I took the pto engagement cover off and the seatand top cover. Everything looks good. The shaft and fork move like they should at least as far as they can. No parts are laying in the bottom. It drove fine just the pto stopped working. Is there a roll pin or something that should be in somewhere or something? I'm sure the clutch itself isn't the issue. Thanks for the help.

I found the problem. Wasn't the pto at all. It's the gear reduction box mounted to the pto housing for the backhoe. Someone put grease in it instead of oil and blew the cage apart that holds the 3 gears that spin to run the hydraulic pump. Any ideas where to get one of those and what it's actually called? There is a tag on the hoe itself with 3 different numbers... one is 290098. The middle is 184111 and the last one is VDP12DDDDDD24. Would that be a part to look for for the tractor or the hoe or are they the same? Like is the hoe universal for any tractor or made just for that ford? Thanks again.

A picture would go a long way as in what you have. That said you might be better off to just by a PTO hyd pump and hook it up instead of trying to find parts for the what ever it is you have that is broken

I found out it's a Sherman C8 backhoe. The gearbox that bolts to the pto and the hydraulic pump mounts to the back to spin it faster. That's the part I need. The gearbox that bolts to the tractor and the hydraulic pump. For some reason I can't put pics up. Sorry

As has been said. It will probably be cheaper and easier to find a modern hydraulic pump that is designed to run directly off of a 540 rpm PTO. surpluscenter.com has a number of them at different flow rates and price points:

If you go to the details of any of them and scroll all the way to the bottom you will find a torque bar kit made to bolt the pump to the tractor to keep the body of the pump from spinning.
