parked on incline this winter. ran and noticed hi temp. down 2.5 gal coolant. tightened lower rad clamp. noticed that oil level was a little high. added coolant ran and parked on level. am gonna check oil drain plug to see if coolant at bottom of oil pan. should i also do a leak down test ? what else to check ? other than head gasket does cavitation affect cylinders. i know it is a non-sleeved motor.

If your oil looks like a vanilla milkshake, you most likely have either a pinhole in the side of a cylinder wall ("cavitation erosion"), or else a rust hole on the bottom of the water jacket. Cavitation erosion is repaired with cylinder sleeves at a machine shop. A rust hole on the bottom is repaired with either a new block, or sealing the bottom of the water jacket with epoxy.

Cylinder head gasket failures on these engines are very rare. Sorry for the bad news.

We had a 401 ford in the shop several years ago that the pinhole was too low to be covered with a sleeve. We put about 3/4 inch of Hard Block in it.We never heard back on that repair.

I used liquid glass on a Cummins engine once and it stopped the leak, Cant say if that will do for you or not.
