Ford 501 Industrial backhoe/loader transmission oil change

I have a Ford 501 loader/backhoe. I am changing the transmission oil. The tractor has a 4 speed transmission with reversing option. When I drained the oil, over 20 quarts came out. The book I have calls for 6.5 quarts? I do not have the maintenance manual and I am concerned that I should put more oil back in(than 6.5 quarts) but 20 quarts seems a bit excessive??? Also, What oil should be used, I can't find a spec on the oil type, it looks like hydraulic/trans oil came out.

You dont say if the previous owner filled it. You could have a crossleak between rear or tranny case but as long as you dont have a leak at the PTO shaft or the input shaft of the tranny I dont think it would hurt. I believe it calls for 90 weight gear oil. Theres a level plug on right side by footboard. Also theres a bolt on plate on right side bottom front that has a weep hole in it that should have a cotter pin thru the hole. The cotter pin keeps the hole open for any oil leak that might start leaking. You can tell if its gear or engine oil. Take good care of that reversing tranny, very hard to find parts for, if it stops working, tractor stops working.

501 backhoe/loader???

Are you getting that number from a tag on the loader frame, like I9-501? If so, that is the model number of the loader frame only, and the loader would be a 740 series loader, but it still doesn't tell us what model tractor it is mounted on.

The only 501 tractor Ford made that I am aware of is the 501 series offset series, but I don't think that one would be good with a backhoe on it.

Thanks for the info on level plug, I'll look for it. I'll baby it, can't afford to replace it. I am afraid there is a leak which is why I wanted to find some way to see if its full. My Dad may have added the extra oil, he's 92 and doesn't remember how much he has added over the years.

(quoted from post at 17:52:18 05/31/17) I believe I have the tractor model number correct, I see D 50111 on the serial number plate, the engine has 2024A.
What location did you get those numbers from?

To finish decode: D50 = 4500, 1 =diesel vertical exh., 1 = no pto, 1 = 4x4 power reversing trans.

DO NOT use 90# in power reverser or any where on it. use 134 and it works in rear end ,loader hyd and power steering if seperate resivour.

The model number stamped into the foil tag and the flat spot on the bell housing are codes that have to be deciphered to know what the real model of the tractor is. As has already been stated, D50 at the beginning says that the true model of the tractor is a 4500. IanC got the rest correct, except that the last 1 should be a letter, as they didn't start using numbers for the transmission code at the end of the model number until much later than when the 4500 was produced. If it has the 4x4 power reversing transmission the last character should be an F, not a 1.

The "Engine" number on the tag is a date code for when the engine was assembled, and the second character should be a letter, not a number, so I am betting that it is 2C24A, which would mean that the engine was assembled on March 24, 1972 during the midnight shift.

There should be another number on the tag called the Unit Number, which tells when final assembly of the tractor itself happened. Post that number and we can tell you when that was.

Also, what manual are you using that tells you the transmission should only hold 6.5 quarts? It sounds like you have the wrong manual since you had the model number incorrect.

I have a note from when I had a 4500 that says 19 quarts of UTF for a 4 x 4 torque convertor transmission.

If you can find an Operator's Manual specific to the 3400/3500/4400/4500 Utility/Industrial models get one. Here's on on ebay:

Also, the regular Ford Service Manual for the 2000/3000/4000/5000 series tractors will cover a lot of your tractor for major service work, like the engine, rear axle, etc., but there is a separate service manual set that covers the 3400/3500/3550/4400/4500 Utility/Industrial models specifically and will have information on that auto reversing transmission and the unique steering setup on your 4500 that are not in the reguilar thousand series manuals if you ever need to do anything more than routine maintenance.
