2910 block porosity

Hi, I have a ford 2910 mark 2. Diesel block is porous in the cylinder walls.

Can one just bore these out and reline?

And who would be capable of doing this?

Or would one be better to put in a different engine?

Take it to a reputable automotive machine shop and tell them to bore and resleeve it back
to standard size.Order a standard size rebuild kit and rebuild it. I have done dozens of
them. Have got one out of a 6610 at the machine shop now. I have never had one to come
back. Be sure to keep coolant conditioner in it after the rebuild.

Do you bore to fit standard thin-wall sleeves, or do you bore to fit a thick-wall sleeve, and then re-bore? I used to do the former, until I found out that the cylinder walls weren't very straight sometimes after they pressed those thin-wall sleeves in. It costs more, but I feel it's worth the extra cost.

I've done more 401 6-cylinder engines than I care to count. And we had way more 3 and 4-cylinder engines out in the field. Something about those 1980s 401 blocks that were really bad about pin holes.
 
My 2 cents is pay the extra money for pressure
testing of the block before and after the work. I've
seen more than one that leaked at the bottom of a
cylinder and into the crankcase. The only repair(
unless you patch with epoxy) is replacing the block
in that case.
 
Bern, We always have used the thick walled sleeve and bored the sleeve back to standard. I have never had a problem. I see more of the 3 and 4 cyl engines due to the fact we don't have a lot of the 401's in my area, but I have done a few.
 
Install the sleeves using KW block sealer as a lubricant I've sleeved blocks with big holes in the walls using KW without leaks.

thanks for all your replies. it has only 250 hours on it.

it was a blue town or state tractor and was vandalized lightly.

then sat for years, when i opened her up one cylinder was really pitted bad where water lay in it.
