I wired my ford 801 with new wire harness. Wire from coil positive to resistor and
resistor to amp guage the tractor will not start but if alligator clips are put on each
side of resistor it starts perfectly. What am I doing wrong? 12 volt conversion.

What coil are you using?
6v coil, resistor uses between the coil and key switch
12v coil, resistor goes between the coil and dist.
Get the good NAPA coil with built in resistor and you don't need the resistor.

The ignition system doesn't connect to the amp gauge, it connects to the switched side of the terminal block or the key switch if there's no terminal block.

May have told you wrong about the 12v coil, can't remember how it wires.

Get a NAPA IC14SB cool with internal resistor and do away with the external resistor, their more trouble than they're worth.

Also correct the wiring at the amp gauge.

801 did not have an amp gauge as OEM equipment. If yours is indeed an 801, it's already been farmerized. Do as Destroked said and get ignition (coil) wire attached to switched side of terminal block or ignition switch.

tell us, in more than 4 cryptic words exactly how you are wired. better yet, post up a schematic!

then we can help you un farmerize your farmerized electrical system that you then further farmerized.
