600 series 4 speed with high low (8speed)

My Father in law purchased a super nice low hour 600 that has been sitting in a shed for many years. We got it home, and after a new battery, oil Change and new points it fired right up and runs perfect. The tractor has the standard 4 speed between the legs shifter. It also has a high/low shifter on the left side of the transmission. 4th gear in high is scary fast. Neither one of us is a Ford tractor expert by any means but we were wondering if the high/ low was common? Rare? Thanks for looking. Adam Koch. Aviston Illinois.

I expect that you will find that the auxiliary transmission is actually a Sherman combination high/low/direct unit, making it a 12 speed/3 reverse.

Move the shifter handle to the neutral position and pull it out to the left side about 1/2 inch. Now pull it back for direct.

Sherman combination transmissions in Ford tractors of similar vintage are not uncommon.

As Dean said probably a combo trans. Here is my video explaining the different style sherman handles and how to shift them.

Also, be aware that the PTO speed is affected by the Sherman!
