175 Diesel Main Bearing Question

I pulled a 175 diesel put of a 3600 Ford. Stripped down to a
bare block so it can be bored and etc. This engine I was told
by the owner had never been taken apart before but I found
all of the main bearing were .010 undersize.
Could this been like this from the factory? Or maybe the
engine was opened up a long time ago.
Anybody have a similar experience with a 175?

Yes, this is possible. Sometimes the factory would do this if a crank was damaged on the assembly line. Rather than throw it away, they would simply turn it down and install undersize bearings.

That said, the odds are far higher IMHO that this was done by a previous owner, and not the factory.

Thanks. I think you are right. I looked at the rod bearings after I posted this and they were .010 under also. I would think a 10 - 10 crank from the factory would be rare.

I've never seen under sized cranks in these engines but have disassembled a few Ford pickup engines from the 70's that had under sized rod bearings, main bearings or both, tore down a original never been out of the car Chrysler 340 that the block was bored .020 over.

Look for dates on the bearing shells.

My 3000 is a 68 model but has a newer casting number on the side of the block . I don't know where the idea came from but I was thinking it was a Ford rebuilt motor ?

35 - 40 years is a long time to have never been overhauled . Maybe your motor was a factory rebuilt replacement and the previous owner understood it to be a "New" motor since it was a Ford deal ? Just a guess .
