My father in law bought a Ford tractor as a project but having hard time trying to figure out what he has. Serial numbers don't make any sense when looking up meaning of codes
DS1142

C489215
logo in hood says its a 4600 but serial numbers don't fit any codes we can find on internet. Please help , may be a industrial tractor cause we found traces of yellow paint..

Build date Jan 07 ?6 day shift
Serial number is to high for a 66 model and is about right for a 76 model.
I don't have info on -600 models codes

Ford 4600SU model, diesel engine, Independent PTO 540 rpm, transmission ???. Assembled January 7th, 1976. Made in USA. Serial number is consistent with early 1976 mfg.

What is confusing is the top numbers. D means its 4000 but next should be a numerical number but instead its a letter S.

You're looking up the codes for a -000 series tractor, best I could find is -600 series use different codes that have two letters at the beginning instead of one like the -000 series use.

Yes, sixbales nailed it. The DS1 at the beginning of the model number is a 4600SU. The next 1 says it has a diesel engine and the 4 says it has independent 540 rpm PTO. The last character should tell us what kind of transmission it has, but none of my references mention a "2" as a transmission type. The parts site only lists the 8 speed on the 4600 SU, which would normally be designated by the letter "C" at the end of the model number. Are you sure that it's a 2 at the end of the model number?

Anyway
I think the 4600 SU is just the 1976 to I think 1981 version of the 4000 SU

Mostly the same some things like alternator and tach pick gear are different.

So it is DS114C, which makes it a 4600SU with a diesel engine, independent 540 rpm PTO and 8 speed transmission.
