NAA Weak/Intermittent Spark

I have a '53 NAA that starts, idles ok for 30 seconds then begins to run ragged.

I have changed the points, condensor, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs, coil, ignition switch, and some wires. The spark at the plugs is occasionally (rarely) strong, and then it gets weak, sometimes there is no spark at all.

It is the original 6 volt system, positive ground system. I have done most of the testing with a charger connected to the battery... it doesn't help.

Any thoughts??

I would replace condenser if spark appears weak, or if you see a spark when opening/closing points.

new points will corrode or get a white powder on them almost instantly. run a piece of rough construction paper through them to clean the contacts.. not smooth paper...

take off dist cap.. bump engine over till points are closed... take high voltage wire from coil, off the dist cap and place near motor.. 1/8 of inch or less... take a non conductor like a plastic rod and open and close the points... while watching the coil wire.. you should hopefully have a nice blue spark when the ignition switch is on and it should spark... every time you open the points... If not.. you need to trouble shoot at that point...

Trouble shoot then parts NEVER EVER the other way around or you will cause more problems then you fix but now that you have done the parts thing try these things.

#1 try a hot wire from the ignition side of the battery to the coil ignition side. If it runs well that way your problem is from the coil back and could be poor connections or a bad ignition switch. If it does not help then.
#2 Clean the points with a point file or the flap from the box they came in. Make sure you have them set at 0.025 and that gap is pretty much the same at all 4 lubes of the distributor.
#3 make sure when you open the points by hand with the ignition on that you get a spark that you can both see and hear. No spark means the points need cleaned or you got the points form TSC or other such place that sells China junk parts

A bad condenser, points, coil are capable of jumping a small 1/8" gap and will send you down a road to no were. I had rather have no advice than that advice... Making a spark checker out of a old spark plug is about as bad...

1/4" about 20KV its the law... Invest in a spark checker and stop guessing... Guessing has fooled a many a man guess how I know...

I WAS HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS , EVEN AFTER CHANGING EVERYTHING, I DID SOMETHING I NEVER DID IN 15 years, I took the
plate off that holds the points and condenser, under that there are two hammer flippers probably wrong terminology, , MINE WERE HARD TO
MOVE, THEY FLIP BACK AND FOURTH, I OILED THEM UP SO THEY WORKED FREELY AND WALLA , TRACTOR STARTS AND RUNS
BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE. 1953 jubilee , ED
